PART II, EUROPE. When to travel where? A country’s best travel seasons guide

In my second part of putting together a worldwide overview of all countries best travel seasons I expanded the information on recommended travel months for all European countries. Stay tuned – Africa, Asia and Oceania are to come in the next couple of week. 

 

EUROPE

Temperatures within Europe can vary significantly. Traveling around the Mediterranean Sea in July and August can be pretty hot, whereas Scandinavian countries are moderately warm at that time of the year.

Albania

Recommended: May-June and September-October are the most comfortable travel months for Albania. Average temperatures during summer until August reach up to 27°C.

Andorra

Recommended: November-March are good travel months for winter sport fans. July-September are warm and dry. Avoid: Spring months from April-June should be avoided, being cold and moist.

Austria

Recommended: June-September are best to travel Austria, which is characterized by the typical Middle European climate. Nature and city trips should be considered to be done before or after summer’s peak season in order to avoid tourist crowds. Skiing season reaches from December-April.

Azores

Recommended: June-October are the peak season months on the Azores with the least rainfalls from July-September. Still rain and sun take turns throughout the whole year. Temperatures hardly exceed 22°C.

Balearic Islands (Menorca, Mallorca, Ibiza)

The Balearic Islands can be traveled throughout the whole year. Recommended: May-June and September-October are the most comfortable travel months. July-August are also suitable for a beach holiday, even though it can get very hot.

Belarus

Recommended: May-June and September-October are the best travel months for Belarus, with July being the warmest month of the year with temperatures reaching up to 30°C. Avoid: August is month with the most rainfalls. Belarus is generally influenced by a continental climate with find frost in five to six months of the year.

Belgium

Recommended: May-September are most recommended for traveling Belgium with warm temperatures. Like most of the Middle European countries, Belgium has a moderate climate. Even though snow falls in winter, temperatures are not too cold.

Bulgaria

Recommended: summer months from June-September are recommended for traveling Bulgaria with warm temperatures and a 0% raining probability. Avoid: the winter months from November-March are dominated by cold weather conditions.

Canary Islands

Recommended: April-October are the most recommended travel months for the Canary Islands, which are characterized by light winds throughout the whole year with temperatures hardly exceeding 30°C . Even during winter months temperatures regularly reach more than 20°C.

Corsica

Recommended: May-October are the most recommended travel months for beach holidays in Corsica, even though the island is an attractive travel destination all year round. Trekking and hiking tours should better be postponed to September-October as you will find heavy fog, rain and volley in the mountains during the peak summer months.

Croatia

Recommended: May-September are most suitable for beach holidays, even though Croatia is an attractive travel destination for all year round. Spring and autumn months are mild along the coasts with possible snow falls in the inland.

Czech Republic

Recommended: April-October are the recommended travel months with nice and warm weather conditions. Avoid: November-March are the unfriendly, cold and moist winter months.

Cyprus

Recommended: April-October are the most recommended travel months, with July and August being especially hot. Cyprus is in general characterized by a warm Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers in the inland and moist and warm conditions at the coast.

Denmark

Recommended: summer months from June-September are especially recommended for traveling Denmark, even though the country is a suitable travel destination throughout the whole year. A frequent and fast change of weather conditions is typical for Denmark as well as the long, bright summer nights from May-August (just like in all Scandinavian countries).

Estonia

Recommended: May-September are the most recommended travel months. Days in June are especially long with 19 hours of daylight and mild temperatures in the evenings. Avoid: October-March are the rough winter months with short days and only 4 hours daylight, constant frost and lots of snowfalls.

Finland

Recommended: June is the most recommended travel month for summer holidays in Finland with fewer tourists and long, bright and sunny days. In contrast the months March-April are most suitable for winter holidays in the Finnish mountains.

France

Recommended: April-June as well as September-March are the recommended months for traveling Paris. April-October are the best months to drive to the Mediterranean Sea and skiing season in the France Alps and Pyrenees is from December-April. Holiday season of the French locals is in July and August, making these months quite crowded.

Germany

Recommended: June-August are the recommended months with stable and nice weather conditions. Generally Germany can be traveled throughout the whole year, offering all kind of different activities. Spring and autumn are especially recommended for traveling the South and Western parts of Germany, whereas the East and South-East shall be traveled in summer. Skiing season lasts from December-March.

Great Britain

Recommended: May-September are the months with the least rainfalls. Still the climate of England & Co. is moderate throughout the whole year with moist conditions throughout the whole year and possible rainfalls also during summer. Avoid: October-February are cold and wet winter months.

Greece

Recommended: April-June and September-November are the most recommended travel months for Greece. In general you will find Mediterranean climate on Greece with hot and bone dry summer days, which are best to be spent in the North of Greece or at the seaside. Avoid: November-March are the most rainy months.

Hungary

Recommended: May-October are the best travel months. Hungary has a moderate climate with hot summers and cold winters. Autumns and springs a rather mild with possible rainfalls all year long.

Ireland

Recommended: March-June are the most comfortable travel months. The Ireland climate is characterized by the influence of the Gulf Stream and South-Western winds, leading to a moderate climate throughout the whole year with warm summers and mild, rainy winters.

Iceland

Recommended: June-September are the recommended travel months for Iceland. The climate is oceanic cold with chilly summers and mild winters, even though the closeness to the polar circle.

Italy

Recommended: June-September are the most recommended travel months for beach holidays in North Italy, whereas Sicily and Southern Italy are also suitable to travel in March with sunny and mild conditions. Temperatures in Southern Italy can reach up to 40°C.

Latvia

Recommended: May-September are the most recommended travel months for Latvia. The climate is in general moderate with significant temperature variations. Avoid: Winter from November-March can get very cold.

Lithuania

Recommended: May-September are the most recommended travel months for Lithuania, which is in a transition zone between Continental and Maritime climate. Therefore the climate is overall pretty moderate and changeful.

Malta

Recommended: May-October are recommended travel months due to comfortable temperatures, even though the months June-August can get very hot. Winters are moist but mild and summers are characterized with a lot of sunshine.

Montenegro

Recommended: May-September are best to travel Montenegro with a Mediterranean climate along the Adriatic coast, which is the most popular tourist destination. Summers are mainly dry and winters are short and remain mild.

Netherlands

Recommended: May-September are most recommended for traveling the Netherlands, even though it can get crowded at that time. Netherlands has in general a mild, comfortable clime with warm, but changeable summers and a short spring. Avoid: October-February can get cold and very rainy.

Norway

Recommended: June-August are the best travel months with especially long days. The Gulf Stream is responsible for an overall moderate climate in Norway, especially along the coast. Southern Norway is characterized by typical Scandinavian summers, which can be changeable as well as very warm. The North of Norway offers great skiing conditions throughout the whole year.

Poland

Recommended: May-September are the most recommended travel months for Poland, with July-August being the peak season months. Avoid: November-February: Temperatures in the winter can fall down to -30°C.

Portugal

Recommended: March-October are the most recommended travel months for Portugal, with temperatures in spring reaching 22°C. Climate along the coast is oceanic mild, whereas it can get pretty cold in the North with more rainfalls. The South of Portugal is dry and especially hot during summer. Avoid: November-February are characterized with a lot of heavy rain falls.

Romania

Recommended: May-September are best to travel Romania. Temperatures in summer are especially very hot in the inland and more comfortable at the coast due to light winds.

Sardinia

Recommended: May-June and September-October are best to travel Sardinia to experience nature, go hiking or trekking. Also beach holidays can be done from May with warm sea temperatures until the beginning of October. Overall, Sardinia is an attractive destination throughout the whole year.

Sweden

Recommended: June-August is the peak season for traveling Sweden, when it can get quite crowded in the Southern and Western parts of the country. February-April are also advisable for winter sport fans. The Scandinavian Midnight Sun can be seen from May-July. Overall Sweden is an attractive destination throughout the whole year.

Switzerland

Recommended: May-September are the most recommended travel months. In general the climate in Switzerland can vary between different regions. Weather conditions in the Northern part of the Alps are mild to cold with summer temperatures around 23°C. Whereas the climate South from the Alps tends to be Mediterranean. Skiing season lasts from December-April.

Sicily

Recommended: May-June and September-October are the best travel months for active travelers with comfortable temperatures to explore the nature and sights across the island. In general the climate of Sicily is very inviting all year long with mild winters and more than 300 sunny days per year.

Slovakia

Recommended: July-August are the best and warmest travel months with temperatures reaching up to 30°C. Winter sport fans should visit the country from December-February.

Slovenia

Recommended: March-October are the recommended travel months along the Adriatic coast. Average temperatures in July-August reach 25°C.

Spain

Recommended: May-October are the best months to travel Spain, even though Madrid or Andalusia should be visited before May or after October instead due to more comfortable temperatures. Northern Spain is moderately warm, whereas temperatures vary significantly between summer and winter as well as day and night in the central part of the country. The South of Spain is characterized by subtropical conditions with long and hot summers.

Turkey

Recommended: May-June and September-October are the best travel months for Turkey as July-August get very hot.

Ukraine

Recommended: August-November are the best travel months during a typical sunny and warm autumn. Avoid: December-February are the cold winter months with lots of snow, followed by a changeably spring. Mediterranean climate can be found along the Black Sea coast.
