PART III, AFRICA. When to travel where? A country’s best travel seasons guide

In my third part of putting together a worldwide overview of all countries best travel seasons I expanded the information on recommended travel months for all African countries. Stay tuned – Asia and Oceania are to come in the next couple of weeks. 

AFRICA

Africa’s climate is geographically and climate-wise a very diversifed continent.

North Africa – Coastal area

Recommended: June-October with sunny and hot Mediterranean climate conditions. Avoid: November-May are chilly, rainy and stormy.

Morocco

Recommended: May-October are the recommended travel months for beach holidays with temperatures at the coast reaching up to 40°C. In contrast summer shall be avoided for traveling the country’s interior as temperatures may exceed 50°C. Night in the dessert get quite chilly all year round.

Algeria

Recommended: June-September are the recommended months for travels to the coast with temperatures rarely exceeding 30°C and very few rain. For a Shara tour however, the winter months should be preferred. November – April have a comfortable climate in the South of Algeria, with cold nights below 0°C though.

Tunisia

Recommended: April is the most recommended travel month with comfortably warm climate. The summer months’ heat is only bearable at the coast. May-October are the the most suitable months for traveling the country’s North.

Libya

Recommended: February-April as well as November are the recommended travel months for Libya. You will find Mediterranean climate along the coast as well as an extremely hot and dry climate in the country’s interior with 50°C during the day and 0°C in the nights.

Egypt

Recommended: the best travel months depend on the planned activites. October-November and February-April are the ideal for trekking, dessert tours and round trips. May-September are ideal for a seaside holiday, whereas the Red Sea can be traveled to throughout the whole year.

North Africa – Inland

Recommended: March-June (as well as September-October for Egypt) with high temperature differences during day and night. Avoid: July-Febraury shall be avoided with summer being too hot and winter too cold with closed Atlas passes.

Niger

Recommended: November-March are the most recommended travel months after the raining season with bearable temperatures. You will face significant temperature differences between night and day throughout the whole year.

Chad

Recommended: November-March are the best travel months with comfortable temperatures of 25°C and no rainfalls. Avoid: June-September shall be avoided due to the rainy season.

Sudan

Recommended: September-April are the best travel months, especially for the North of Sudan due to bearable temperatures during the day. The climate along the coast of the Red Sea is more constant and water temperatures reach 25°C throughout the whole year.

Mali

Recommended: November-March are the best travel months with a dry and comfortable climate. Avoid: March-April are extremely hot with temperatures reaching 40°C.

Sahara

Recommended: March-June as well as September-October are the best travel months with moderate temperatures and significant temperature differences during night and day. Avoid: July-February shall be avoided with summer being too hot and winter too cold with closed Atlas passes.

East Africa

Recommended: Decmeber-March and July-September are the best months due to the dry season and best period for climbind Kilimandscharo and Mt. Kenya. Temperature differences between day and night are pretty high and coast and lake areas can be chilly during June-August. Avoid: March-May shall be avoided due to the „big rainy season“ and November-December due to the „small rainy season“. Coast and lake areas reach highest temperatures in February-March.

Eritrea

Recommended: November-March are the recommended travel months with a comfortable climate along the coast. For the country’s central interior the months September-February are to be preferred.

Ethiopia

Recommended: October-May are the best travel months, being out of the country’s main rain season. Temperatures are most comfortable from November-January with 10 sun hours per day.

Uganda

Recommended: December-February as well as June-August are the best travel months for Uganda with comfortable, not too hot temperatures.

Tansania

Recommended: January-February are the most recommended travel months, when also animal herds can be spotted in the Serengeti Savanne. These months are characterized by dry and warm weather conditions.

Sambia

Recommended: May-October are the best travel months for Sambia with temperatures reaching from 15°C to 27°C during the day, which fall down to 5°C during the night.

Sansibar

Recommended: June-October as well as December-March are the most recommended travel months for Sansibar.

Central African Republic

Recommended: November-February are the best travel months for the country’s South, whereas October-March are recommended for the Northern parts of the country. Avoid: Rainy season shall be avoided due to muggy climate conditions and heavy rainfalls that may obstruct transportation.

Kenya

Recommended: December-March and June-October are the most recommended travel months. Avoid: Rainy season in Kenya from April-June and November-December shall be avoided. Safaris will mostly not be possible during rainy season and the coasts are characterized with muggy climate.

West Africa

Recommended: November-April are the most reommended travel months due to the hot dry season. The inland is characterized by stormy winds, especially in January-February. Coast areas are hot with high humidity throughout the whole year. Avoid: April-October shall be avoided due to the rainy season.

Mauritania

Recommended: November-April are the most recommended travel months for Mauritania. All climate zones in Mauritania are characterized by hot temperatures and few rain.

Senegal

Recommended: December-May are the best and dry travel months for Senegal with 10 sun hours per day and water temperatures reaching about 20°C.

Ivory Coast

Recommended: November-April are the best, dry travel months for the Ivory Coast with December-March being especially recommended for traveling the coast.

Nigeria

Recommended: October-March are the most recommended travel months for Nigeria with bearable temperatures during the day and cold nights.

 

Burkina Faso

Recommended: December-February are the most recommended travel months for Burkina Faso with a dry and comfortable climate apart from the country’s rainy season.

Cameroon

Recommended: November-April are the most recommended travel months with dry climate conditions. Rainfalls occur more often from March-June. Avoid: Main rainy season from July-October.

Gabon

Recommended: June-September are the most recommended travel months. Avoid: the remaining months are characterized by extremely tropical climate conditions.

Angola

Recommended: June-August are generally the best travel months for Angola, even though weather conditions vary between different parts of the country.

Namibia

Recommended: April-May and August-October are the best travel months for Namibia with temperatures around 25°C. Animals can be spotted best from August-October. Avoid: December-March shall be avoided due to extremely high temperatures and heavy rain falls.

Democratic Republic of Congo

Recommended: June-September are the months in dry season and therefore the best travel months. Avoid: Rainy season should be avoided as infrastructure will be impaired and streets not passable.

Botsuana

Recommended: May-September are the best travel months. Botsuana has a mainly hot and dry dessert climate. Avoid: December-March are extremely hot and characterized by pourings rainfalls.

South Africa

Recommended: November-March are the most recommended travel months for Central South Africa and the coasts.

Madagascar

Recommended: March-June are generally the most recommended travel months with the coast regions being also especially attractive to travel to in July-August due to least rainfalls.
